I remember how much this image shocked me when I first saw it and still makes me feel incredibly sad. Here's an icon symbolising a society that praises emaciation as beauty.

thanks for adding this into the archive. very shocking, poignant and, in addressing anorexia through the medium of advertising, conscious of the central place of commercial culture in the whole phenomenon.

Susie Orbach wrote an interesting piece in The Guardian with regards to the reception of this campaign. she talks about the ways "visual culture is reconstructing our relationship to the body":

"...We do need to campaign. And at the visual level - which is where this campaign is located. Shocking images are one way, pictures of women of different sizes, as in the Dove campaign, and the deconstructing of the beauty industry through videos are others. We need the best our art directors can do to democratise our visual field so that all of our beauty and variety is included."
