This image was part of an exhibition of the best of Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 I saw at The Natural History Museum. The photographer, Norwegian Arne Naevra, believes 'the picture clearly shows how climate change is affecting the Arctic" (aftenposten, 26 October 2007).

To me it seemed humourous at first, but also deeply saddening. I find it interesting that this photograph is part of a wildlife competition sponsored by Shell - why would Shell be keen to associate itself with environmentalist messages of this kind? More than this, I find it interesting because the phenomenon of climate change/global warming it's meant to symbolise is so emotive discussions about the image often end up in as dead an end as the one at eBaum's World.
