Peace/Ban the Bomb

This icon celebrated its 50th anniversary in April 2008, having first appeared in Britain during a nuclear bomb demonstration in 1958. Originally known as 'ban the bomb', the sign is now recognized universally as the 'peace' symbol.

This symbol had great power on first appearance, and has lasted the tests of time, as it is still understood by people today. However, it could be argued that its power has been diminished due to its frequent use at demonstrations, protests etc. Now that the sign is often worn on t-shirts and accessories, the sign's significance is more to do with fashion and less politically motivated. Nonetheless, everybody recognizes the sign when they see it.
