of staged events
most interesting for me are the allegations of an internal army report corroborating that this was a staged event by the US army's 'psycho-corps' - http://articles.latimes.com/2004/jul/03/nation/na-statue3
interesting case study of ideological iconography. media-savvy. self-conscious.

Re: the end of the line for sadam Hussein
A good example of Lacan's shifting signifier. The myth has changed from the original. Used to embody the positive, progressive values of capitalism, now embodies the more negative aspects - greed, spin, corrupt power.
At the time the image was originally broadcast, was a symbol of liberation// American triumph. Was not about freedom of Iraq. Prophetic of Saddam's eventual hanging - rope around neck.
Symbolises the shambles that is Iraq. Specifically the 'american flag' fiasco.
The photographer would have found it difficult to frame the shot comprehensively due to the nature of the event. Interesting that the photograph doesn't convey a sense of chaos... seems very ordered almost calm. Seems staged; a planned monumental event. The significance of pulling down the statue was realised long before the even occurred, so the image is all surface - symbolism was intended rather than 'natural'.
It ends up being more a symbol of media spin and Capitalist propaganda rather than a symbol of liberation.
